Spring Gardening Quotes

During the few moments of sun that we've had recently, Jasper and I had gone out to prepare our garden for planting. While using our matching shovels and turning over the dirt we naturally came across a worm.

I held it up and asked Jasper if he wanted to touch it, to which he emphatically replied no. So I asked him why not?
He said, "Because it's wobbly!"

Later, while he was on his playset and I was busy weeding, he shouted "I was tackled!" Not sure what football had to do with gardening, I asked him what happened.
Jasper said, "I was tackled by a grasshopper!"

Go figure.

Shhh...We're Hunting Leprechans

This St. Patty's Day we decided to try our hands at catching our very own leprechan (or as Jasper says "reprechan"). As everyone knows, leprechans come out during the night before St. Patrick's Day, and if you're really skilled you'll catch one!

First: the Leprechan Trap.
Which best attracts the leprechan if wrapped in green paper and covered with shamrock stickers.

Second: the Hunting Gear.
Any green clothing works, but if it says Ireland it's even better.

Third: the Bait.
It's best to use the leprechan's favorite food, Lucky Charms cereal.

Fourth: Setting the Trap.
Pick a good spot and have your Daddy help you prop it up on a stick.

Now wait for the little unsuspecting guy to come along and THWAT! You'll catch your leprechan. Now shhhhh.

In the morning Jasper was so excited to check his trap. Alas, the leprechan was too quick but he did leave some green glittery leprechan dust and chocolate gold coins.

Not too bad for a bunch of novices. And may the luck of the Irish be with us next year.

Happy Birthday at Happy Trails

For Rick's 40th birthday, I asked him how he wanted to celebrate. - He quickly shot back, "Go mountain biking in Moab!"

- I said to him, "Gee, you're as funny as a sock in the neck. Now, what's your second choice?"

It turns out he just wanted to enjoy the occasion with our friends and their families. Luckily, we recently heard about Happy Trails Adventures in Easton, WA where they will take you on a horse-drawn sleigh ride out to their private sledding hill for a day of family fun. They provide heated warming tents, tables and mitten drying racks, too.

Here's our two-horse open sleigh.

The sleigh was pulled by a couple of magnificent Percheron horses.

"Dashing through the snow..." Jasper sang Jingle Bells a handful of times while on the way to the sledding hill.

The view from the front seat.

Grandmother and Opa enjoying the snowy scenery.

A great family shot of the Eagans ~ Michelle, Maddy and Sean.

Mike and Waylon Cowger ready to hit the powder.

A view from our warming tent. Happy Jack's employees made sure the outdoor fire pit and the in-tent wood stove were constantly stoked.

We did our best to add some birthday decorations.

Uncle Sean, Maddy and Auntie Shannon ready to race to the bottom. Ready, set, go!

The Daddy's ("Very-Soon-To-Be-Forty" Sean and "Just-Turned-Forty" Rick) with the kiddos.

Go, Grandmother, Go!

Rick was Jasper's personal shuttle up the hill all day long. What a Super Daddy!

Auntie Michelle and Maddy, say wheee!

Jasper's favorite was this inner tube that Grandmother brought. He looked like he was riding in a UFO.

"I did it!!"

Richard and Dorie Aho heating up the snow with a little kiss.

We took a break from the sledding to visit the horse corral. The horses are mostly Belgian Draft horses and they are huge! Not to mention they looked magestic walking among the trees and snow.

Hello, Big Fella.

Opa and Grandmother having a great time. Opa fit in perfectly with his hat.

The warming tent was perfect for taking apple cider breaks and enjoying lunch followed by s'mores and birthday cake.

Jasper and Maddy sharing a potato chip.

The birthday boy kickin' back and enjoying the moment.

I think that not only did Jasper and Opa go down the hill more times than anyone, but they had the most fun, too.

We gave the kids (Joey, Jasper and Anna) a break and took them on a sleigh ride around the Happy Trails property.

Gordon the dare devil.

Maddy decided she preferred staying safely at the top of the hill and instead became Jasper's official sled pusher.

Jasper and Frosty

We were blessed with one more good snow fall this winter. There was enough on the ground to force us to pile on the long underwear, snow pants, jacket, mittens, scarfs and hats before heading out to play in the yard.

It was wet, sticky snow ~ great for making snowballs which we through at each other and Maverick.

It was also perfect for snowman building. As you can see, when we rolled Frosty's giant snowball body, the snow peeled right off the grass.

Our Soccer Star

We've enrolled Jasper in a toddler soccer class for 2 to 3 year olds. It's pretty cute watching the kids run around kicking and chasing the balls. Of course, the soccer concept of "hands-free" is completely nonexistent in this class.

Jasper always likes to sit in the middle between his coaches.

A warm up run.

Practicing precision by knocking down cones with the ball.

Jumping over hurdles.

Even the best soccer players get tripped up.

A well deserved juice box.
